Manuscripts

Of the six known manuscripts with Paeanius’s Metaphrasis, five are still extant. Although their stemmatic relationship is well established (in part due to the preliminary work for this edition), all of them will be taken into account for the ongoing editorial project.

  • I = Mt. Athos, Iviron Monastery, 812 (Lambros 4932). s. XII. Diktyon 24407. des. mut. μάλιστα δὲ δικαιοσύνης (p. 113.13 Lambros).
  • L = Florence, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Plut. 70.05. s. XIV [1337–1341]. Diktyon 16570. Lacuna πόλιν Ἁρμοζιανὴν (p. 61.20 Lambros) – ὅθεν δὴ καὶ Κρητικὸς (p. 62.25 Lambros). des. mut. εἰ πρὸς ἀλλο (p. 111.12 Lambros).
  • V = Venice, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, gr. Z. 523 (coll. 846). s. XV med. Diktyon 69994. Lacuna πόλιν Ἁρμοζιανὴν (p. 61.20 Lambros) – ὅθεν δὴ καὶ Κρητικὸς (p. 62.25 Lambros). des. mut. εἰ πρὸς ἀλλο (p. 111.12 Lambros).
  • M = Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Cod. gr. 101. s. XVI [1550 ca.]. Diktyon 44545. Lacuna πόλιν Ἁρμοζιανὴν (p. 61.20 Lambros) – ὅθεν δὴ καὶ Κρητικὸς (p. 62.25 Lambros). des. mut. εἰ πρὸς ἀλλο (p. 111.12 Lambros).
  • P = Lanvellec, Bibliothèque de M. le Marquis de Rosanbo, Ms. 296 (Omont 105; “Pithoeanus”). s. XVI. Diktyon 37456. Lacuna πόλιν Ἁρμοζιανὴν (p. 61.20 Lambros) – ὅθεν δὴ καὶ Κρητικὸς (p. 62.25 Lambros). des. mut. εἰ πρὸς ἀλλο (p. 111.12 Lambros).
  • S = Sylburg’s copy from the library of François Pithou (presumably lost).
S, a likely copy of P, was used for Sylburg’s editio princeps. Droysen, building on work by Ernst Schulze and Theodor Mommsen, mainly used L and also report on V, M and S as apographs of this witness. Lambros was the first to consult I, the only (nearly) complete witness, and he also employed L and M as additional witnesses, whiche he believed to belong to an indepedent strand of transmission.
