s. XI | Parchment, 229 ff.   4 missing folios, see Content; last counted leaf: f. 230r , 369 × 280 mm, 2 col., 50–53 lines per page. |  Minuscule. | Provenance: Cyprus (see Devreesse, Catalogue, pp. iv–vi). Father Athanasios Rhetor, a Cypriot priest who had lived in Paris for several years, was hired in 1642 to acquire manuscripts. In 1643, Athanasios sent a total of 46 manuscripts from Cyprus to Paris to Pierre Séguier (1588–1672), including Ra 534. These manuscripts came into Séguier’s possession at the beginning of 1646. After Séguier’s death, his library passed to his nephew, Henri-Charles du Cambout, Duke of Coislin. In 1735, the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Germain took over the manuscript collection. Finally, between 1795 and 1796, the Coislin collection, along with the manuscripts from Saint-Germain, was transferred to the Bibliothèque Nationale.  Missions 2, S. 855; cf. Idt.; Mac I–IV; XVI proph.; Hexasophion; N.T. (without Gospels). | According to Drevreesse, the codex originally comprised a total of 57 quires, with the quire numbers indicated at the beginning and end of each quire. However, 17 quires are missing, along with four individual leaves from within the codex. Regarding the textual character of Ra 534, it is notable that this manuscript in the prophetic books attests to unique readings (“Sonderlesarten”) that are also found in certain daughter versions. This suggests a great antiquity of the tradition underlying this manuscript. In the Minor Prophets, Ra 534 is a notable carrier of variant readings, serving as a witness to the Alexandrian text (Ziegler, Duodecim prophetae, 39), and in part aligns with the Catena group (ibid., 90f.), which at times has preserved the pre-Hexaplaric text (cf. ibid. 97 with the example of Os. 4:3). In the Book of Daniel, Ra 534 shows an affinity with the Arabic tradition. Ziegler lists a series of unique readings that are represented only by Ra 534 and Arab and concludes that Ra 534 and the Arabic version derive from the same source (see Munnich-Ziegler, Daniel, 142). In the Corpus Ieremiae, Ra 534 is considered the “most idiosyncratic” manuscript (Ziegler, Jeremias, 62). Ziegler notes that Ra 534 exhibits unique readings in Baruch and Epistula Ieremiae that it shares with the Old Latin, indicating a relationship with the Vetus Latina (Ziegler, Jeremias, 22). Additionally, Ziegler demonstrates close connections between Ra 534 and the Old Armenian, not only in the Book of Jeremiah but also particularly in the Book of Ezekiel, chapters 1–20 (Ziegler, Jeremias, 39; idem, Ezechiel, 21). Regarding the text type, Hanhart’s classification in Judith is not clear-cut: in his edition, he lists Ra 534 among the codices mixti, but in his text history (p. 57), he associates Ra 534 with the b-group. In the Wisdom books, Ra 534 forms a pair with Ra 613 (Ra 534′ = 534-613), which is related to the a-group in Sap. and Sir. In Iob, Ra 534 is not as strongly Lucianic as Ra 613. In the case of Sap., Ziegler points out many corruptions that suggest a majuscule Vorlage (Ziegler, Sapientia Salomonis, 9); he also identifies unique readings that Ra 534 shares with the Old Latin (ibid., 21). Gentry has classified Ra 534 within the Egyptian text-type for Ecclesiastes. | Collation: Br.-M. (siglum “l”); LXXGotText-type: codices mixti (Idt.); L (I–III Macc); θ′-text (Dan.); Q-text (Corpus Ieremiae); “Teilzeuge” of the Alexandrian text-type (Is.); cII (Ez.); Alexandrian text-type, partly close to the C-group (XII proph.); Egyptian text-type (Eccl.); Lucianic influence (Iob); related to the a-group (Sap. Sir.).
